The Slot

February, 2008

We went to Ocotillo Wells this weekend for some Jeep'n. We did a little exploring in the northwestern part of the state park. We came across an abandoned mine and then went to "The Slot." You can drive part way in, but then it becomes too narrow and the rest has to be on foot. It's a narrow canyon, about a 15 minute hike from one end to the other. We notice a few large rocks and chunks of soil perched above the canyon, straddling both sides, looking like they could drop on us at any moment. This area does get the occasional earthquake and that would be a bad place to be when that occurs.

Nontheless, this is a very fun hike and is a must see. To get there from Ocotillo Wells you have to have a street legal vehicle, another advantage of being in a Jeep rather than a buggy. The tempature was near 80 degrees that day, but in the slot is was probably a good 15 degrees cooler. Perfect hiking weather.
