Ocotillo Wells - ODF 7

October, 2009

This was a day trip out to Ocotillo Wells with my Willys Wagon. It was the "shake down" run and the Wagon's maiden voyage in the dirt. I had just completed a couple of upgrades and it was a good opportunity to test things out. I want to be sure I have all the bugs worked out before I load up the whole family and find us stranded in the desert.

Boulders ahead Jerry, a rock and a hard place Up and over

David and Jerry with friends joined me on the run and were good sports when my Wagon overheated. I needed to stop a few times to play it safe. It was over 100 degrees that day, but still, I'll need to make some changes so the Wagon runs cooler. This is just the type of issue that can't be exposed while driving around town, so I was still glad I made the trip. I parked it for awhile and scouted for obstacles on foot so they'd have a shot at some more challenging terrain than I was willing to take the Wagon through.

David's turn Yeah, it's fairly steep David into the gully

I managed to spot Jerry directly on top of a small boulder, but we stacked a few rocks and he drove out of it. They both had some tire scrapes and wheel spinning along the way for some added excitement. Fun day. Of course now I'm considering putting air conditioning in the Wagon instead of on board air.
