Calico Mountains

November, 2006

We’re back from another wheeling weekend. After celebrating Thanksgiving at Sheri’s parent’s house we took off to meet up with our 4x4 club at the Calico Ghost Town campground. The ghost town is the remnants (or replication) of an old mining town that once was. Really it’s a bunch of touristy type shops, but there are some cool exhibits and artifacts there from yesteryear. One cool set up they had was showing how they made rope by twisting three strands of twine together.

The Jeep’n at this area is awesome. There are two difficult canyons that are the main draw for the off roaders, Odessa and Doran. We had a group of six vehicles. Many narrow spots and off camber drop-offs added to the excitement with the potential for body damage, but we all completed the run without issue. One of our club members went through an extremely difficult section of large boulders. Very impressive. It was a lot of fun to watch. One other attempted the climb, but was forced to retreat. The rest of us (the sane ones) took the bypass.

We didn’t spend a whole lot of time exploring the many abandoned mines in the area, maybe next time. By the afternoon, Sheri and I are always anxious to get back to camp to be with Caidan. We hate to leave Grandma stuck by herself at camp with all of the babysitting duty for too long of a stretch. By the end of a full day in the Jeep, we’re just beat. I think being out in the wind and the cold all day rather than sitting cozy in a newer Jeep with a top and a heater really takes a toll on us. Oh well, it’s worth it. We really enjoyed the run. Sheri has become a lot braver and more trusting of what the Jeep can do so I think it’s more fun for her now.
